MAAP Needs Participants and Offers Volunteer Opportunities
Are you passionate about strengthening the downtowns of Almonte and Pakenham? Then volunteer and join MAAP! By participating in the MAAP organization, you’ll be working alongside many of your enthusiastic neighbours and local business people.

MAAP Encourages Long-term Vision
MAAP‘s efforts have been inspired by Main Street Middlesex. Middlesex has 11 downtown communities (ranging from 800 residents to 10,000-plus) in south-western Ontario involved in this process. All are building prosperity with new programs such as:

Matching loans for facade restoration
Image and brand development grants
Retail promotion grants
Streetscape beautification grants
Business attraction/retention grants and programs
Festivals and Events grants

MAAP believes that community-driven vision led by downtown stakeholders’ efforts is essential to the successful revitalization of Almonte and Pakenham’s commercial districts. MAAP encourages long term vision and incremental steps to success for downtown revitalization programs and main street vitality. Revitalization does not enjoy lasting success with quick fixes and short-cuts. MAAP’s focus is a comprehensive program in order to keep main street properties occupied with prospering businesses. MAAP is harnessing the energy and efforts of local business people and other volunteers to make revitalization happen.

MAAP has structured its committees and organization based on the National Trust’s Main Street Four-Point Approach™ to Commercial District Revitalization — as this approach has 25 years of experience and has been successfully implemented in hundreds of downtown areas across Canada and the United States (For a full listing of U.S. Main Streets, visit the National Trust’s local Main Street Program listing).

MAAP is Looking for Volunteers
According to Main Street Middlesex General Manager, Cara Finn, "Volunteering with MAAP for four hours each month will make a difference to your downtowns!”

MAAP is looking for volunteers for the following committees (four committees in Almonte and four in Pakenham for a total of eight necessary committees). These volunteer committees, specific to each town, will work simultaneously toward revitalizing our existing historic main streets. Please contact MAAP to discuss where your skills and volunteer efforts are best suited and most needed!

The Organization Committee
Organization committee volunteers form coalitions and partnerships, recruit and manage volunteers and plan fundraising and community outreach.

Organization involves getting everyone working toward the same goal and assembling the appropriate human and financial resources to implement a Main Street revitalization program. A governing board and standing committees make up the fundamental organizational structure of the volunteer-driven program. Volunteers are coordinated and supported by a paid program director as well. This structure not only divides the workload and clearly delineates responsibilities, but also builds consensus and cooperation among the various stakeholders. The Promotion Committee
Those volunteering with the Promotion Committee deal with image, retail promotion, marketing the downtown and special events.

Promotion sells a positive image of the commercial district and encourages consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play and invest in the Main Street district. By marketing a district's unique characteristics to residents, investors, business owners, and visitors, an effective promotional strategy forges a positive image through advertising, retail promotional activity, special events, and marketing campaigns carried out by local volunteers. These activities improve consumer and investor confidence in the district and encourage commercial activity and investment in the area. (From the National Trust’s Main Street Four-Point Approach™).

The Design Committee
Design volunteers attend to building improvements, architecture, historic preservation, streetscape and signage.

Design means getting Main Street into top physical shape. Capitalizing on its best assets — such as historic buildings and pedestrian-oriented streets — is just part of the story. An inviting atmosphere, created through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, street furniture, signs, sidewalks, street lights, and landscaping, conveys a positive visual message about the commercial district and what it has to offer. Design activities also include instilling good maintenance practices in the commercial district, enhancing the physical appearance of the commercial district by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging appropriate new construction, developing sensitive design management systems, and long-term planning. The Economic Restructuring Committee
This group of volunteers looks for new business opportunities and new uses for existing buildings.

Economic Restructuring strengthens a community's existing economic assets while expanding and diversifying its economic base. The Main Street program helps sharpen the competitiveness of existing business owners and recruits compatible new businesses and new economic uses to build a commercial district that responds to today's consumers' needs. Converting unused or underused commercial space into economically productive property also helps boost the profitability of the district. Attention to all these elements, in all four of these committees, creates the conditions for our downtowns to grow, develop and prosper in the years and decades to come.
